The Hellenic Air Force Starfighters...

In the history of the Hellenic Air Force the Starfighter has played an important role. A big number of aircraft have been in use during 30 years, between 1964 and 1993. The first Starfighter came from the Canadair factory in Montreal and a few years later some aircraft arrived directly from Luke AFB after being used intensively for NATO F-104 pilot training in the early sixties.
Greece acquires 45 F-104G (35 built by Canadair and 10 by Lockheed) and 6 two-seat trainer TF-104G (Lockheed) under MAP funding. They arrive at 114 Wing and the 335 Fighter Bomber Squadron is formed with them.
Greece lost a reasonable number of aircraft, which were compensated between 1977 and 1988 when ex-German and ex-Dutch Starfighter arrived after they had been replaced in their countries by more modern fighter aircraft.
Only two Hellenic Air Force squadrons have been using the Starfighter, being 335 "Tiger" Mira and 336 "Olympus" Mira.

The first F-104 squadron became 335 Mira from the 114 Pterix (Wing) based at Tanagra AB. The first aircraft arrived there in April 1964. F-104s operated with 335 squadron from April 16, 1964 on. Hellenic F-104s arrived in Piraeus by ship in March 1964 and transferred by trucks to 114 Wing at Tanagra. Some days later 335 Mira participated in the National Day parade over Athens on March 25, 1964.
Sister squadron 336 Mira, still based at Araxos AB, (squadron operated simultaneously F-84F and F-104G) received their Starfighter between December 1964 and January 1965. On January 15, 1965 the "Spider" squadron was partially equipped with the new F-104G fighters, and the F-104 section moved to the 114 Pterix (Combat Wing) at Tanagra AB. 336 Mira started F-104G operations in early 1965.
Almost 2 years later, at December 19, 1966, the 336 Mira moved to the 116 Pterix based at Araxos AB. The 335 Mira kept flying from Tanagra AB until June 30, 1977 when it joined the 336 Mira at Araxos AB. From that day until early 1993 all the remaining F-104s flew from Araxos AB (116 Pterix) until their retirement.
In June 1972 a lot of 9 F-104G and 1 TF-104G, ex Spanish aircraft, were obtained under transferred MAP funding.
335 "Tiger" Mira (squadron) received 10 RF-104G aircraft and formed a separate "Photoreconnaissance Flight" in December 1987. 335 squadron (Mira Anachaitisis (Interceptor Squadron)) deactivated in May 1992.
336 "Olympus" squadron (Mira Diokseos Bombardismou (Fighter-Bomber Squadron)) deactivated March 31, 1993.

March 31, 1993 was the official date for the withdrawal from service in the Hellenic Air Force (EPA: Elliniki Polemiki Aeroporia).

Ανοίγω αυτό το θέμα για συζήτηση και παράθεση στοιχείων και πηγών για το  F-104 Starfighter.

Ένα κατά την γνώμη μου τουλάχιστον αμφιλεγόμενο αεροπλάνο, που στα χαρτιά οι επιδώσεις του έδειχναν πολύ καλές και συνολικά έμοιαζε μπροστά από την εποχή του αλλά στην πράξη το συνόδευαν παρατσούκλια όπως "ιπτάμενο φέρετρο" και widowmaker (αυτό που κάνει χήρες). Σχεδιάστηκε αρχικά σας αεροσκάφος αναχαίτισης διηπειρωτικών βομβαρδιστικών όπου χάρις την μεγάλη ταχύτητα και την δυνατότητα ταχείας αναρρίχησης σε μεγάλο ύψος θα βρισκόταν άμεσα στο σημείο που έπρεπε για να προλάβει να καταρρίψει τα σοβιετικά βομβαρδιστικά πριν κάνουν άφεση του πυρηνικού τους φορτίου... Το δημιούργημα της Lockheed έμοιαζε περισσότερο με επανδρωμένο πύραυλο κτισμένο γύρω από τον θηριώδη και πρωτοποριακό για την εποχή του J79. Με σύγχρονο ραντάρ και υπολογιστή βολής έδειχνε ένα εξαιρετικό οπλικό σύστημα. Όμως η USAF δεν έμεινε καθόλου ευχαριστημένη και έτσι μετά από μια σύντομη καριέρα με τα μοντέλα A και C το αεροσκάφος έφυγε από την πρώτη γραμμή. Άλλωστε με την εμφάνιση των διηπειρωτικών βαλλιστικών πυραύλων άλλαξαν και τα επιχειρησιακά  δεδομένα , τα βομβαρδιστικά αεροσκάφη δεν ήταν πια η Νο 1 απειλή
Κάπου εκεί όμως άρχισε μια δεύτερη  καριέρα για αυτό. Σε μια χώρα όπου η διαφθορά έχει τεράστιες διαστάσεις με την σχετική λίστα να είναι μακρά και να φτάνει μέχρι τις μέρες μας (ζιεμενς, ντίζελγκέιτ κ.α.) η Lockheed κατάφερε (πως άραγε..?) να προωθήσει το αεροσκάφος της. Έτσι η Δυτική Γερμανία προμηθεύτηκε το μοντέλο G (= Germany) με τοπική κατασκευή (προς μεγάλη χαρά του γερμανικού βιομηχανικού κατεστημένου που καταφέρνει να κερδίζει πάντα.... μόνο ο Schindler δεν τα κατάφερε...) και έγινε το κύριο αεροσκάφος της Luftwafe την περίοδο εκείνη. Μετά από την τεράστια αυτή επιτυχία, που νεκρανάστησε το δημιούργημά της,  η Lockheed (με την ίδια πρακτική…) ενέταξε το αεροσκάφος της στην έκδοση G στο πρόγραμμα MAP για ενίσχυση των συμμαχικών χωρών. Έτσι γέμισε ο τόπος Starfighter, φτιάχτηκαν και τοπικές γραμμές παραγωγής και όλοι ευχαριστημένοι… Όλοι??? Ε όχι ακριβώς, όλοι εκτός από τους πιλότους που καλούνταν να …. υπογράψουν διαθήκη  πριν μπουν στο πιλοτήριο….
Οι περισσότερες αεροπορίες το έπαιρναν  γιατί απλά αυτό τους έδιναν δωρεάν οι ΗΠΑ (λεφτά για αγορές με το βλέμμα στραμμένο στην ανοικοδόμηση από τον όλεθρο του Β’ΠΠ ούτε καν) και ταυτόχρονα ήταν ότι καλύτερο είχαν (επιδώσεις , ηλεκτρονικά). Έτσι έκανα την ανάγκη φιλοτιμία και το χρησιμοποιούσαν σε οπουδήποτε άλλο ρόλο εκτός από αυτόν που σχεδιάστηκε (άλλωστε αυτή η ανάγκη είχε σχεδόν πάψει να υφίσταται).  Στην ΠΑ προτίμησαν να το έχουν για πυρηνική κρούση  και βομβαρδισμό ποντάροντας στην υψηλή ταχύτητα για  διείσδυση στην αεράμυνα του αντιπάλου (με λίγη τύχη θα έφταναν στο στόχο …. Με ένα θαύμα μπορεί και να γύριζαν…). Θεωρητικά τότε ήταν το καλύτερο και ταχύτερο αναχαιτιστικό μας αλλά η ΠΑ (σωστά κατά την γνώμη μου) προτίμησε άλλους τύπους για τον ρόλο αυτό. Στην ίδια λογική της ταχείας διείσδυσης λειτουργούσε και η αναγνωριστική έκδοση.  Με τον καιρό (και μετά από πολλά ατυχήματα) σιγά σιγά έμαθαν τα χούγια του και βελτιώθηκε ο δείκτης ατυχημάτων (χωρίς να φτάσει άλλων τύπων της ίδιας περιόδου).
Παρόλα τα πολλά προβλήματα του τύπου τόσο στο πτητικό κομμάτι αλλά και αξιοπιστίας τα πρώτα χρόνια η Lockheed έκανε και τρίτο θαύμα (έτσι είναι τα θαύματα  .... τρία τρία γίνονται). Στην Ιταλία αυτή τη φορά με το μοντέλο S . Πρόσθεσαν δύο πυλώνες για πυραύλους Aspide (ιταλικό παράγωγο του ΑΙΜ-7 Sparrow ) και έτοιμο και για BVR αναχαίτιση. Έτσι  μετά το G η ΑΜΙ πήρε και τα S και με αυτά έγινε ο τελευταίος χρήστης του τύπου μέχρι το 2004. Τα S τα πήρε και η Τουρκία την δεκαετία του 70 όταν οι ΗΠΑ του είχαν επιβάλει εμπάργκο λόγω Κύπρου (αυτό το εμπάργκο πως έληξε και πως το εκμεταλλευτήκαμε και αν είναι θέμα για συζήτηση …. Όχι εδώ φυσικά). Μόλις όμως έγιναν ξανά διαθέσιμα τα F-4E τα F-104S πέρασαν σε δεύτερο ρόλο και ποτέ δεν θεάθηκαν να χρησιμοποιούν τους Sparrow καθώς όλο το απόθεμα πήγε στα Phantom .
Όμορφες στιγμές τα επετειακά Όλυμπος και Τίγρης  λίγο πριν την απόσυρση του τύπου από την ΠΑ το 1993.

Ωραία αναδρομή για την ιστορία του αεροσκάφους.
Θα έλεγα αν στο μέλλον, κάποιο GB προσφέρεται, να υιοθετηθεί κάτι τέτοιο.
Κάτι δηλαδή σαν βιβλιογραφία του GB ενταγμένο στην κορυφή των θεμάτων κατασκευής.
